Petco Park Concerts: The Insider's Guide

Going to a concert at Petco Park? Start here. This is what we've learned from 20+ years of shows downtown — which venue your show is actually in, which gate to use, what security will take from you, where to sit, how to handle merch, and how to get home.

First thing to know: Petco Park is really two concert venues. Big stadium tours put a stage on the field and fill the ballpark. Most shows, though, play Gallagher Square, the lawn beyond the outfield, on the Sycuan Stage. Different size, different gate, different night.

Where to Sit

Stadium shows: your view depends on where the stage goes, and the stage goes on the field. Seats facing it head-on beat seats down the lines looking at it sideways, even if the sideways seats are closer. Check the seating chart, look at real views from your section, and read our breakdown of the best seats for concerts. The lower seats behind home and down the lines sit behind protective netting — it's a ballpark first.

Early-evening sun: some sections bake while the openers play. The Padres publish a sun and shade map — worth a look before you buy for a summer show. Want to skip the crowd altogether? Suites are available for many shows.

Gallagher Square: it's simpler. Get there early if you want to be up front, or hang back on the slope for room to move and the ballpark lit up behind you. Some shows add reserved or VIP areas — the Gallagher Square seating chart shows the layout. Lawn chairs aren't allowed, so plan on standing or sitting on the grass.

Getting In

• Gates: Gallagher Square shows enter at the Balboa Gate on J Street. For stadium shows all gates open, and your gate assignment arrives by email — our gate map shows where each one is.
• Doors: usually 60-90 minutes before showtime. Your show's guide has exact times.
• Tickets: everything is mobile. Load your tickets before you reach the gate, in whichever app you bought through.
• Bags: single-compartment clear bags up to 12" x 6" x 12", clutches and purses up to 5" x 7", plus infant and medical bags. No backpacks, and no Camelbak-style hydration packs. Full details in our bag policy guide.
• No re-entry: once you're scanned in, you're in for the night. Grab anything you need from the car first. More on in and out privileges.
• Lockers: Lock & Go lockers sit outside several gates, including the Balboa Gate, at a flat $14 (as of 2026 and subject to change) — but the Padres say they may not be available for non-baseball events. Don't count on one; see our lockers guide.

What You Can't Bring to a Concert

Concert rules are stricter than baseball rules, and this is where people get turned around at the gate. Things that are fine at a Padres game that aren't fine at a show:

• Outside food and drink — including factory-sealed water and empty reusable bottles
• Umbrellas of any size
• Signs, banners and posters of any kind
• Gum
• Lawn chairs or anything with a rigid frame (ADA exceptions apply)

Also on the Padres' concert list: backpacks and Camelbak-style packs, selfie sticks, vapes, laser pointers, hula hoops, candy necklaces, pacifiers, eye drops, and inhalers without a prescription. Heads up: if you're used to Padres games, water bottles and umbrellas are the big ones. Both are fine at games and banned under the standard concert rules. That said, certain past events have had their own amendments to these rules, so double check for your specific event.

What to Bring

• Valid ID (required for alcohol, and for entry at 18+ and 21+ shows)
• Mobile tickets, loaded before you leave
• A card or phone wallet — there's no cash anywhere
• A light layer — downtown cools off fast once the sun drops
• Comfortable shoes, especially for general admission
• A rain jacket or poncho if the forecast looks iffy, since umbrellas stay outside

Concert Merch at Petco Park

Merch at a ballpark show comes with a few wrinkles you won't hit at a smaller room. A few things worth knowing:

• Watch for early merch. Bigger tours often open outside merch stands before doors, and some sell to anyone, ticket or not. Check the artist's and promoter's socials the day before — that's where hours and locations get announced.
• Buy during an opener. Merch lines are longest right as doors open and right before the headliner. The middle of an opening set is usually the sweet spot. Popular sizes can go early.
• It's all cashless. Card or phone only, inside and out.
• You'll carry it all night. With no re-entry, there's no running it back to the car. The bag rules still apply after you buy, and a hoodie won't fit in a 5" x 7" clutch. A 12" x 6" x 12" clear bag can hold a folded shirt. Otherwise, plan to wear it or tie it around your waist.
• Posters: ask at the booth whether they have tubes or sleeves, and keep it flat and dry until you're home.
• Skip the bootlegs. Unofficial shirts sold on the sidewalk aren't the real thing, and the Padres prohibit unauthorized selling around the ballpark.
• The Padres Team Store won't have tour merch. It's Padres gear. Regular hours are Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 11am-4pm, subject to change on event days.

Food & Drink

Since nothing comes in from outside, plan to eat before you go or buy inside. Everything is cashless; if you only have cash, reverse ATMs near sections 108, 135, 208 and 303 (and in the Ticket Office lobby) turn it into a prepaid card. You'll need a valid ID to buy alcohol. Getting There & Getting Home

Trolley: the easiest way in and out. All three lines serve 12th & Imperial, right next to the ballpark, and the Green Line also stops at Gaslamp Quarter station. See the trolley guide and load your fare on PRONTO before you go. Or drive to Old Town, park free, and ride in. The Coaster works from North County.

Parking: the Padres' own lots are the Lexus Premier Lot, Tailgate Park and the Padres Parkade, and all three are cashless. Spots right next to the ballpark are the slowest to get out of after a big show, so a lot a few blocks away can save time. Read the Petco Park parking guide and reserve ahead when you can.

Rideshare: the Padres' designated Uber and Lyft zone is on Harbor Drive at Park Boulevard, across from the Hilton Bayfront — take the pedestrian sky bridge to and from the ballpark. After the show, demand and surge pricing spike. Walk a few blocks before you tap, or request a little early. More in our rideshare guide.

What Time Do Concerts End?

Gallagher Square shows usually wrap by 10pm. Stadium shows run a little later, usually ending by about 11pm. Every show sets its own schedule, though, so check your show's guide. More on concert end times.

Gallagher Square's earlier finish comes with the neighborhood. Unlike the stadium, the lawn is open to the condos around it, and a group of East Village residents has been suing the Padres and the city over Gallagher Square concert noise since 2023. The case was set for trial in October 2026.

When it lets out, traffic right around the ballpark is thick and the lot exits clog, but downtown has a lot of ways out and it clears fairly quickly.

Accessibility & Guest Services

Accessible seating comes in wheelchair, semi-ambulatory and transfer categories; call the Padres at 619-795-5555 when you buy. Guests with disabilities get priority on all public elevators. Guest Services centers near sections 108, 131 and 303 and in Gallagher Square handle questions, wheelchair storage and KultureCity sensory bags, and assistive listening devices are available at section 108. Tickets & Presales

Most shows sell through Ticketmaster or the Padres, with presales running in the days before the public on-sale. Those can include the artist presale, Live Nation, Ticketmaster, the Padres, credit card programs and partners like Spotify. Each usually needs a code, and quantities can be limited. Signing up for the artist's newsletter is the most reliable way to get one.

Is my show at Petco Park or Gallagher Square?

Your ticket will say. Stadium tours are in the ballpark itself. Smaller shows — most of the calendar — are at Gallagher Square, the lawn beyond the outfield.

Are there age limits?

Most shows are all ages, but some electronic shows are 18+ or 21+. Each show's guide lists the age policy.

Can I smoke or vape?

No. Petco Park is smoke-free, and that includes vaping.

Petco Park Concert History

Petco Park became one of San Diego's top concert venues the moment the Rolling Stones played it in 2005. Since then it's hosted Madonna, Paul McCartney (twice), Metallica, Taylor Swift, the Beach Boys, the Eagles and Billy Joel, plus orchestras, local bands and even high school bands.

Recent years brought Garth Brooks, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Elton John and Bad Bunny in 2022, Morgan Wallen in 2023, and in 2024 Chris Stapleton, the Foo Fighters, Journey & Def Leppard, Sting and Billy Joel, Blink-182, Green Day and P!nk. Sir Elton returned in 2025, along with Chris Brown, LCD Soundsystem, Counting Crows, The Head and the Heart, Brad Paisley and Rilo Kiley. 2026 brought P!nk and Ed Sheeran, plus festivals like Dia de los Deftones and Proper, with Luke Combs on the books for June 2027.
