Who Is J.I.D?

J.I.D, born Destin Choice Route in East Atlanta on October 31, 1990, has earned his place as one of hip-hop’s most respected lyricists. His stage name—given by his grandmother for his jittery, restless energy as a child—turned out to be prophetic. He raps with that same relentless intensity today, balancing technical mastery with raw, autobiographical storytelling.

From Football to Hip-Hop

Before music took over, J.I.D was a football player at Hampton University. After an injury derailed his athletic career, he pivoted fully toward rap—and the culture hasn’t been the same since. He co-founded the Spillage Village collective alongside EarthGang, creating a creative hub that helped define Atlanta’s next generation of hip-hop.

The Dreamville Years

J.I.D’s breakthrough came in 2017 when he signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records and dropped his debut album The Never Story. The project was packed with autobiographical detail and technical brilliance—proof that he could carry a full-length project, not just deliver standout verses.

He followed with DiCaprio 2 (2018), which cemented his reputation as a rapper who could combine rapid-fire, double-time flows with complex, multi-syllabic rhyme schemes, hooks that actually stick, and storytelling that feels lived-in, not performed.

Mainstream Breakthrough

While J.I.D built his reputation among hardcore hip-hop fans, his feature on Imagine Dragons’ “Enemy” (from Netflix’s Arcane soundtrack) pushed him into the mainstream. The track became a global hit, introducing J.I.D’s voice to millions who might never have clicked on a Dreamville release.

But unlike many artists who dilute their style for crossover success, J.I.D stayed true to his roots. He’s as comfortable bodying a feature as he is carrying an entire album—and that versatility is exactly why he’s respected across the board.

Recent Work: The Forever Story & Beyond

By the time The Forever Story dropped in 2022, J.I.D was no longer “the next big thing”—he’d arrived. The album showcased his growth as both an emcee and a songwriter, balancing introspection with aggression, ambition with control.

His 2025 project God Does Like Ugly continues that evolution, proving that J.I.D isn’t content to rest on his laurels. He’s still rapping like he has everything to prove, even after already proving it.

Young Nudy brought a complementary but distinct energy to the lineup. Where J.I.D is all technical precision, Nudy leans into melodic, hypnotic flows and Atlanta trap energy. Together, they represented different sides of the city’s hip-hop spectrum—a well-rounded bill that showcased Atlanta’s depth.
