Indie rock luminaries Death Cab for Cutie return to San Diego for an evening of melancholic beauty, soaring melodies, and 25+ years of unforgettable songs at Gallagher Square. Fresh off signing with ANTI- Records and working on their 11th studio album, Ben Gibbard and company bring their emotionally resonant live show to Petco Park, with support from Brooklyn synth-pop favorites Nation of Language.
Death Cab for Cutie, formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997, entered the ranks of the era’s definitive bands fueled by co-founder Ben Gibbard’s complex, often bittersweet songcraft. What started as a side project while Gibbard attended Western Washington University evolved into one of indie rock’s most enduring and emotionally resonant acts.
The current lineup features Ben Gibbard (vocals, guitar), Nick Harmer (bass), Jason McGerr (drums), Zac Rae (keyboards), and Dave Depper (guitar). Together, they’ve created a sound that balances intricate instrumentation with deeply personal lyrics, earning them both critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase that spans generations.
Death Cab’s worldwide popular breakthrough came with 2003’s RIAA Platinum certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of “The Decade’s 50 Most Important Recordings.” The album featured “The Sound of Settling” and the epic title track—an eight-minute build that became a live staple and emotional centerpiece of their shows.
Plans (2005), their Atlantic Records debut, saw Death Cab ascending to even greater heights. The album earned RIAA platinum certification and a Grammy nomination for “Best Alternative Album” while spawning chart-topping singles “Soul Meets Body,” “Crooked Teeth,” and “I Will Follow You into the Dark”—the latter receiving a Grammy nod for “Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals.”
“I Will Follow You into the Dark,” a sparse acoustic track about love and mortality, became one of the 2000s most enduring indie songs. Its simplicity and emotional directness connected with millions, cementing Death Cab’s reputation for turning personal vulnerability into universal anthems.
Subsequent albums showcased the band’s willingness to experiment while maintaining their emotional core. Narrow Stairs (2008) debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200, featuring the haunting “I Will Possess Your Heart” with its four-minute bass-driven intro. Codes and Keys (2011) explored more electronic textures, reaching number 3 on the charts.
Kintsugi (2015), their eighth album, arrived during a transitional period following founding member Chris Walla’s departure. The album tackled themes of heartbreak and rebuilding, with many seeing it as Gibbard processing his divorce from actress Zooey Deschanel. Despite the personal turmoil, it produced some of their most poignant work.
More recent albums Thank You for Today (2018), The Blue EP (2019), and Asphalt Meadows (2022) found the band continuing to push their sound forward while maintaining the lyrical depth that defines their catalog. Asphalt Meadows spawned two Top 10 hits on alternative radio, proving their enduring relevance.
In January 2026, Death Cab announced they’ve signed with ANTI- Records, ending their 20-year run at major label Atlantic. The move to ANTI—home to artists like Tom Waits, Mavis Staples, MJ Lenderman, and Fleet Foxes—signals a return to indie roots while maintaining the production quality fans expect.
“We are thrilled to be joining the roster at ANTI- which includes some of our favorite artists, old friends and in many cases, both,” said Gibbard. “We also can’t wait to begin this new chapter with the wonderful staff at ANTI- and share with you what we’ve been working on.”
The band’s 11th studio album is expected in 2026, marking their first release under the new label partnership.
Death Cab concerts balance the energy of alternative rock with the intimacy of singer-songwriter performances. Gibbard’s vocals—which carry both fragility and power—translate beautifully live, while the band’s tight musicianship brings depth to songs some fans have carried with them for decades.
Expect classics like “Soul Meets Body,” “I Will Follow You into the Dark,” “Transatlanticism,” and “Title and Registration” alongside deeper cuts and new material. The setlist typically spans their entire career, creating a retrospective that honors longtime fans while introducing newer audiences to their catalog.
Reviews consistently praise the band’s ability to recreate studio precision live while adding spontaneity and extended jams. The emotional connection between band and audience remains palpable—these are songs that have soundtracked breakups, road trips, and quiet moments of reflection for millions of listeners.
Brooklyn-based trio Nation of Language brings their sophisticated synth-pop sound as direct support. Consisting of Ian Richard Devaney (lead vocals, guitar, synth), Aidan Noell (synth), and Alex MacKay (bass), the band has quickly become one of indie music’s most compelling acts.
Their fourth album Dance Called Memory (September 2025, Sub Pop) showcases their evolution—blending ’80s new wave influences with modern production and deeply personal songwriting. The album received critical acclaim, with previous record Strange Disciple (2023) earning Rough Trade’s Album of the Year honors.
Nation of Language creates atmospheric, danceable synth-pop that balances melancholy and euphoria. Songs like “I’m Not Ready for the Change,” “Weak in Your Light,” and “In Your Head” demonstrate their ability to craft hooks that stick while maintaining artistic depth. Their live shows have earned praise for tight performances and genuine connection with audiences.
The pairing with Death Cab makes perfect sense—both bands excel at translating emotional vulnerability into compelling music, just through different sonic approaches.
