Kids Ride Free - Youth Opportunity Pass & Family Weekends

Posted in 2024 in

In San Diego, MTS public transit is the way to get around. Save money, avoid parking headaches and traffic. And children can ride for free. Here’s how it works.

Kids 5 & Under

Kids 5 & under ride MTS for free at all times. No card or proof of eligibility is required.

Youth Opportunity Pass – Children 18 & Under

Children 18 years of age or younger can ride MTS public transit for free with a Youth Opportunity Pass. This is a pilot program through June 30, 2024. Hopefully it will be extended.

It’s a little hairy to figure out. Each child must have a Youth account on the PRONTO app, or a Youth PRONTO card to access free rides. There is more info and some videos to watch which help explain the program.

The YOP, as it is sometimes referred, is good for free rides on the bus and trolley and the North County Transit District’s FLEX, BREEZE, SPRINTER and COASTER.

Family Weekends – Kids 12 and Under

Kids are also free on weekends, part of the Family Weekends promotion: Two kids 12 and under ride free with an adult, no PRONTO card needed.

NEW – Easier Payment Option: MTS, NCTD now offer contactless fare payment with credit cards, smartphones.
