Vedder Cup

The Padres-Mariners rivalry has an unusual connection to Eddie Vedder, the Pearl Jam frontman who has ties to both San Diego and Seattle. For years, fans informally referred to the matchup as the "Vedder Cup."

In March 2025, the Padres and Mariners formally turned the nickname into an annual competition. The winner of the season series receives the Vedder Cup, a trophy incorporating a guitar provided by Vedder. The teams also partnered with the EB Research Partnership, a charity co-founded by Eddie and Jill Vedder.

The Mariners won the inaugural Vedder Cup in 2025, taking five of six games from San Diego. The Padres reclaimed the trophy in 2026 by sweeping all six games against Seattle.

Padres-Mariners Rivalry and History

The Padres and Mariners have faced each other regularly since the introduction of interleague play in 1997, although they are not traditional geographic rivals. The teams share a connection through Eddie Vedder and their shared West Coast identity, and the matchup became an officially recognized rivalry series in 2025.

The 2026 season significantly changed the recent balance between the clubs. After Seattle dominated the 2025 season series 5-1, San Diego responded with a 6-0 sweep in 2026.

The Padres and Mariners have never met in the MLB postseason.

2024 Exhibition Series

The Padres and Mariners also met at Petco Park for a pair of exhibition games on March 25 and March 26, 2024, following Padres Spring Training and San Diego's international series in Seoul, South Korea.
