Padres in the World Series

Most of the San Diego Padres postseason success has been in the playoffs, with very little of it occurring at Petco Park. (So far).

The World Series has never been held at Petco Park.

The Padres’ two World Series appearances came in 1984 and 1998, before Petco Park opened in 2004. Their home World Series games were played at the stadium now known as Snapdragon Stadium.

If the Padres reach the World Series, Petco Park would host the San Diego games under the 2-3-2 schedule determined by home-field advantage.

San Diego Padres in the World Series

The Padres have reached the World Series twice in franchise history. They have not yet won a championship.

1984 World Series — Padres vs. Tigers

After winning their first National League pennant, the Padres faced the Detroit Tigers in their first World Series appearance. Detroit had won 104 games during the regular season and featured future Hall of Famers including Jack Morris and Alan Trammell.

San Diego had its own stars, including Tony Gwynn, Steve Garvey, and Goose Gossage, but Detroit won the series 4-1.

The Padres’ three home games were played at Jack Murphy Stadium, two decades before Petco Park opened.

1998 World Series — Padres vs. Yankees

The Padres returned to the World Series in 1998 and faced the New York Yankees. New York had won 114 games during the regular season, then went on to sweep San Diego 4-0.

The Yankees were led by future Hall of Famers including Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. The Padres featured Tony Gwynn and Trevor Hoffman along with All-Stars Andy Ashby, Kevin Brown, and Greg Vaughn.

San Diego’s home games were played at Qualcomm Stadium, the name used by the former Jack Murphy Stadium at the time.
