On Sunday December 6, 2015, the University of San Diego (USD) Toreros faced the San Diego State University (SDSU) Aztecs in an outdoor NCAA basketball game at Petco Park. It was the first basketball game held at Padres stadium in its history, part of that year’s new Bill Walton Basketball Festival.
The court was positioned in left field. This is not the first exotic outdoor locale for SDSU’s basketball program. In 2012, they played a game on the deck of the USS Midway aircraft carrier against Syracuse. The NCAA is hoping that Petco Park proves to be a little less slick and a little less windy. (As are the basketball players!)
San Diego St. and USD basketball teams face eachother regularly, and have been on eachother’s schedule each year since 1998, with the Aztecs dominating the historical matchup. A landmark Petco Park sporting event that is not to be missed!
