San Diego is one of the country’s most desirable places to run a marathon. The terrain is not too hilly, the population is overall well-conditioned and the weather is not too shabby either. And if you are looking for a landmark to serve as a starting point or finish line for a marathon or other races in San Diego, you could do a lot worse than Petco Park.
San Diego runners get ready. In 2026, there are several marquee races taking over downtown near the ballpark, blending fitness with world-class entertainment.

Part 5K road race, part massive music festival. Founded by the Grammy-winning artist himself, Diplo’s Run Club makes its return to downtown San Diego. The flat, fast morning 5K routes runners through the Gaslamp Quarter before crossing a spectacular finish line back on the ballpark grounds. The finish line instantly transforms into an all-day, outdoor dance party headlined by a performance from Diplo and special guests at the Gallagher Square main stage. All race registrations include a technical race shirt, finisher’s medal, and full access to the post-race music festival.

The event formerly known as Padres Pedal the Cause has evolved into the Curebound Cancer Challenge. This signature fundraising event brings together thousands of participants each year to raise money for collaborative cancer research, with millions raised to date to fund innovative research grants right here in San Diego.
Important Venue Update: While the physical athletic event (featuring cycling, walking, and running options) has officially moved to UC San Diego’s La Jolla campus for the 2026 cycle, Curebound continues its deep partnership with Petco Park through high-profile stadium initiatives like the Concert for Cures.
