5 Must-See Hidden Gems at Petco Park
Whether it’s your first time visiting the San Diego Padres’ beautiful stadium or your 100th, it never hurts to arrive early, take an inning off, or linger after the game to explore what makes Petco Park special.
- Tony Gwynn Statue – One of the greatest hitters and San Diego’s most beloved local hero. In 2024, it was moved to the newly renovated Gallagher Square, the glorious family-minded community park that’s a must-see of its own. Arrive early or visit during the 7th inning stretch when crowds are lighter—you’ll want time to take in both Mr. Padre and the revitalized space around him.
- Western Metal Supply Building – The proud and stubborn anchor in left field corner that refused to be demolished. This 1909 warehouse was incorporated directly into the ballpark design, making it the only building in Major League Baseball integrated into the playing field. Walk the outfield concourse for the best views, or check out the ground-floor Team Store. The rooftop bar is ticketed, but worth it if you can swing it.
- Behind-the-scenes ballpark tour – See sights that are off-limits during games: the dugout, press box, luxury suites, and field level. Tours run on non-game days and select game days. Book ahead—they sell out fast, especially in summer.
- The Food – For real. Check out the full menu, grab something local like tri-tip nachos from Seaside Market, and wash it down with a San Diego craft beer. This isn’t generic ballpark fare—it’s San Diego on a plate.
- The Views – Counterintuitive to come in and look out, but San Diego is one of our country’s most beautiful spots and Petco Park sits right in the heart of it. The downtown skyline, glimpses of San Diego Bay, the palm trees against blue sky—take it in from every direction. Walk the upper concourses for 360-degree views, or grab a seat in the outfield sections where you can see the city and the harbor.
Insider tip: Gates typically open 90 minutes before first pitch. That’s your window to explore without missing any action. Plan accordingly.
