On September 28, 2018, the San Diego Padres and City of San Diego dedicated Trevor Hoffman Way at Petco Park’s main entrance, where it intersects with Tony Gwynn Drive. Mayor Kevin Faulconer joined Hoffman and Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler for the ceremony, calling it “the coolest intersection in San Diego.”
Hoffman spent 16 of his 18 major league seasons with the Padres, retiring with 601 career saves—including 552 with San Diego—and becoming the first pitcher to reach both the 500 and 600-save milestones. He finished his career with a 2.87 ERA and became synonymous with “Trevor Time”—the ritual of entering save situations at Petco Park to AC/DC’s “Hells Bells” that began in 1998.
Hoffman was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018, his third year on the ballot. The street dedication came just weeks after the Padres unveiled a statue of Hoffman in August 2018 at the Park at the Park beyond center field, the same area where Tony Gwynn’s statue stands. The Padres retired Hoffman’s number 51 in 2011.
After a shoulder injury during the 1994 players’ strike reduced his fastball velocity from 95 mph to below 90, Hoffman adopted a change-up grip that became his signature pitch and transformed him into one of baseball’s most dominant closers. The street naming was proposed by the Padres just two days after his Hall of Fame induction, with San Diego City Council approval following shortly after.
Trevor Hoffman Way now joins Tony Gwynn Drive and Peter Seidler Way as streets honoring Padres legends at Petco Park.
