Find Free & Cheap Street Parking Near Petco Park

Posted in 2026 in

Street parking around Petco Park used to be one of the cheapest options downtown. That’s mostly over. The Hospitality Zone covering the Gaslamp and the streets around the ballpark now enforces meters until 10 PM, Sunday enforcement has been added at most downtown meters, and the city has rolled out aggressive surge pricing for Padres games and major events. You can still find a deal if you know the rules — but the rules have teeth.

Street Parking Cost

The standard downtown rate is $2.50/hour. But during Padres games and major events at Petco Park, the city flips street meters to “Special Event Metered Parking” at $10/hour. The surge starts 2 hours before first pitch and runs until 4 hours after the event begins. Maximum time also extends to 6 hours during events — meaning a full stay can run you a flat $60.

One exception: vehicles displaying a valid Disabled Person Placard are exempt from event surge pricing and can still park for free.

Leaving Car Overnight

Yes, you can leave your car on a public street overnight. Just check the signs and know when meters fire back up the next morning — usually 8 AM or 10 AM, depending on the block.

Gaslamp Zone

The Hospitality Zone runs between Broadway and Harbor Drive, from 1st Avenue to 7th Avenue — basically everything just west of Petco Park. Inside that zone, meters are enforced from 10 AM to 10 PM to capture the dinner and game-day crowds. Park east of 7th Avenue and you’re outside the zone, where standard rules apply (still check the signs on your block). Note: New Parking Meter Rules

Street Parking Free On Holidays

San Diego suspends meter enforcement on these recognized city holidays:

January: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
February: Presidents Day
March: Cesar Chavez Day (March 31)
May: Memorial Day
June: Juneteenth (June 19)
July: Independence Day
September: Labor Day
November: Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day
December: Christmas Day

Heads up: on summer holidays like Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day, the city still heavily enforces beach and coastal parking even when downtown meters are free. Don’t assume “free downtown” means “free everywhere.”

Payment Options

Meters accept credit cards, coins, and mobile payments (Apple Pay, Android Pay). The city also uses the Park Smarter app for paying remotely and extending your time without walking back to the meter.

One catch: as of November 1, 2025, the city tacks on a $0.35 transaction fee on every credit card or app payment — whether you pay at the meter, through Park Smarter, or via Text to Pay. Coins are still fee-free.
