What soccer teams play at Snapdragon

San Diego Wave FC – National Women’s Soccer League expansion team that began play in 2022.

New MLS Soccer Team – In 2025, a new San Diego MLS team will play at Snapdragon.

San Diego Loyal – Though they still play their home games at Torero Stadium at USD, you can see the Loyal playing at Snapdragon this year.

In 2023, you can catch Manchester United at Wrexham at Snapdragon as well as the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup Semifinal. In June 2023, Mexico vs Cameroon in an International Friendly Match and in November, the 2023 NWSL Championship. In college sports, head to Snapdragon to watch matches between SDSU Aztecs v USD Toreros Mens and Womens soccer teams.

Soccer has always had a strong presence in San Diego, with a rich history and a growing popularity in recent years. The city has an ideal climate for year-round play and an active sports culture.

The history of soccer in San Diego dates back to 1968 when the city witnessed its first professional soccer league. Although the league lasted only one season, it left a lasting impact on the local soccer scene. In 1976, the San Diego Jaws were founded, igniting a resurgence of soccer in the city. Since then, soccer has become deeply ingrained in San Diego’s sports culture, with teams like the San Diego Sockers and the San Diego Loyal SC making significant contributions.

History
San Diego boasts numerous professional soccer clubs that cater to players of all skill levels. One such team is the San Diego Sockers, with a history dating back to 1978. The Sockers have a remarkable record in indoor soccer, having won championships in 15 different years. The Sockers play at Pachenga Arena. As mentioned above, San Diego Loyal SC, established in 2019, has also made a name for itself, along with the Wave. These professional clubs provide ample opportunities for aspiring soccer players to showcase their skills.

The San Diego Toros were a professional soccer team that played in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1968 to 1976. Originally known as the San Diego Galleons, the team rebranded as the Toros in 1973. During their existence, the Toros enjoyed several successful seasons and gained recognition for their roster of talented players, including the legendary Northern Irish footballer George Best. However, despite their accomplishments on the field, the team faced significant financial difficulties, ultimately resulting in their dissolution in 1976. The San Diego Jaws was a professional soccer team that played in the American Soccer League (ASL) from 1976 to 1978. The team was formed as an expansion franchise after the San Diego Toros disbanded. Despite the Jaws’ promising start, financial difficulties plagued the team, leading to their demise after just two seasons.

College Teams
In addition to professional soccer, San Diego is home to several college soccer teams. Most notably San Diego State University Aztecs, competing in the NCAA Division I, have a strong soccer program. They compete at the SDSU Sports Deck.
