SDSU vs Fresno St. History & Matchup

The Fresno State–San Diego State football rivalry, a longstanding college football tradition, pits the Fresno State Bulldogs against the San Diego State Aztecs. These two Mountain West Conference members have been facing off since their first meeting in 1923 when San Diego State emerged victorious with a score of 12–2. Over the years, they’ve contested each other 61 times, with the Old Oil Can trophy at stake for the victor.

With the formation of the Mountain West Conference in 1999, the rivalry was temporarily paused but revived in 2012 when Fresno State also became an MW member. Currently, San Diego State leads the series 30–27–4, and the competition for the Oil Can trophy adds a unique historical touch to this storied rivalry, highlighting the connection between the two schools and the regions they represent.
