Holiday Bowl 2022 at Petco Park

The 2022 Holiday Bowl featured the North Carolina Tar Heels and Oregon Ducks. It was the first holiday bowl at Petco Park after the 2021 bowl game was canceled just before kickoff due to complications from Covid. Oregon defeated North Carolina 28-27.

North Carolina had finished the regular season with a 9-4 overall record and an ACC Coastal Division Championship. The Ducks finished the regular season at 9-3 and ranked 15th in the final College Football Playoff rankings. It was the first game between North Carolina and the Ducks.

Another thrilling finish was added to the long history of the SDCCU Holiday Bowl when Oregon’s Bo Nix threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Chase Cota with 19 seconds left on the clock, giving the No. 15 Ducks a 28-27 victory over North Carolina. The Tar Heels had the ball at the Oregon 41-yard line and only 1 second remaining, but Oregon defensive back Trikweze Bridges knocked the pass in the end zone to the turf. Oregon had been trailing 24-14 when Noah Burnette kicked a 19-yard field goal with 9:13 remaining, however Nix was able to engineer a 79-yard drive to set up the winning score. It was the 7th time in the bowl game’s 43-year history that the contest was decided in the final minute. Oregon running back Bucky Irving was named offensive MVP for his 13 carries for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns. Oregon outside linebacker Mase Funa was named defensive MVP. Despite a shootout being predicted between the two teams, the crowd of 36,242 in the bowl game’s debut at Petco Park were still able to witness an exciting finish.
