Gaslamp Promenade

Gaslamp Promenade Project MapSan Diego is in the process of revamping its downtown area, creating a promenade to make the Gaslamp Quarter more friendly for walking, dining and entertainment. The first steps of the project, called the Gaslamp Promenade, are expected to be complete by the end of June.

The Gaslamp Promenade was first introduced in October 2019 with the goal of increasing the area’s appeal, attracting more businesses, and creating more space for dining and entertainment. To do this, the promenade will be closed to vehicular traffic daily, 11-3 a.m. — except at cross streets. This will impact Broadway to K Street, but Fifth Avenue from L to K streets will always remain open to vehicles unless there’s a special event.

Street crews have installed traffic bollards at 3 of 11 intersections inside the planned walking district. The bollards will keep bar, restaurant and shop patrons safe from moving traffic and help create eight distinctive plazas that make up the promenade. The project will also include repaved streets that preserve historic elements, new trees for shade and street lights, the removal of curbs, art, sculptures, and street furniture. Fourth Avenue is in the process of converting from parallel to diagonal parking to address the limited parking available downtown.

Benefits to the Community

The Gaslamp Quarter Association says the promenade will improve walkability and help make the area a destination for tourists and local families, and create more tax revenue for the city. The initiative will also enable more businesses to expand and be included in the area. The project funds will come from parking meter revenue in the area that will deploy back to that same neighborhood.

Highlights

  • Formation of eight distinct plazas along Fifth Avenue for better pedestrian access
  • Repaved streets that preserve historic elements
  • New trees for shade and street lights
  • Removal of curbs, as much as possible
  • Addition of art, sculptures, and street furniture

    How It Works

Fifth Avenue would not be permanently closed to vehicles. But would have pedestrian-only hours beginning at 11am through 3am daily.

    Parking

Parking spaces will be removed as part of this initiative. To address the limited parking downtown, Fourth Avenue is in the process of converting from parallel to diagonal parking to create more spaces. All accessible parking spaces that are removed from Fifth Avenue will be replaced within close proximity to the Gaslamp Promenade.

    Cost

One source estimates the cost at $40 million. This cost will be addressed with state and federal grants, corporate donations and private investment.
