About San Diego Legion Rugby

Hailing from sunny San Diego, California, the Legion has become a force to be reckoned with in the world of rugby. Under the skillful guidance of head coach Danny Lee, a former All Blacks player renowned for his expertise, the Legion has demonstrated an impressive performance on the field. In fact, the team achieved an extraordinary feat during its inaugural season in 2019, clinching the MLR championship title. This momentous victory served as a testament to the team’s dedication, perseverance, and sheer talent.

The Legion’s success did not stop there. In the subsequent seasons, they consistently secured their place in the playoffs, reaching the finals in both 2020 and 2021, narrowly missing out on the ultimate glory. Nevertheless, their incredible journey has solidified their reputation as one of the league’s most formidable competitors.

The heart and soul of the Legion resides in its captain, Blair Cowan. A Scotland international known for his versatility, Cowan shines as a key figure in the team’s lineup. Whether he’s dominating the flanker position or taking charge at number eight, his skill and determination inspire his teammates and captivate the audience.

2023 Season Recap
The San Diego Legion’s 2023 rugby season was exceptional and record-breaking. They achieved a remarkable 16-1 record, securing the most wins and the longest winning streak (14 games) in Major League Rugby history. With 74 points, they established a new league high and maintained an undefeated home record (9-0), boasting the largest point differential (+269), before going on to their first MLR championship match. The Legion faced the New England Free Jacks (15-2) in the title match, having advanced by defeating Seattle in the Western Conference Final.

The San Diego Legion aimed to cap a strong season with a championship but fell just short, losing narrowly to the New England Free Jacks 25-24 at SeatGeek Stadium. Le Roux Malan’s 77th-minute try for the Free Jacks proved decisive, countering Nathaniel Augspurger’s two scores for the Legion. Despite a valiant effort, the Legion couldn’t secure their first title, marking the end of a memorable season.
